A popular South African vegetable dish is called Chakalaka, which was born in the townships of Johannesburg. The braai is undoubtedly the country's favourite pastime, which is the South African equivalent to barbecue. A popular braai meat is Boerewors (homemade farmer’s sausage). Specially in the rural areas ostrich, antelope, buffalo and crocodile meat is often served.
