In the north, KwaZulu-Natal borders to Swaziland and Mozambique, and in the east to the Indian Ocean. After Gauteng it is the most populated province in the country. The only South African kingdom stands for a proud history, lively cultures, breathtaking landscapes, unequalled cities and pleasant temperatures all year round. Behind a sub-tropical coast strip, green hills rise towards the land.
The western border is formed by the mountain front of the Drakensberg, also the border to Lesotho along 200 km. Here you find the world natural heritage uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. On impressing hiking trails, you can discover rock formations such as the Amphitheatre and rock paintings. In the “valley of a thousand hills” you drive through picturesque landscape with the beehive-shaped huts of the small Zulu villages.
Along the endless coast of the Indian Ocean, there are many attractive resorts with wonderful sand beaches and varied water sports facilities. The northern part of the coast is still quite wild and untouched. Sodwana Bay is one of the world‘s best diving regions. Thanks to the mild climate, bathing is possible all year round – but only on sheltered beaches! One of the many game and nature reserves is Hluhluwe Imfolozi. South Africa’s oldest reservation area was created 100 years ago in order to save the white rhino. The Itala Game Reserve is in the north, close to the border to Swaziland. On game watching tours through the reserves, you might see the „Big Five“. The Simangaliso Wetland Park, a world natural heritage, is the home of hippos, crocodiles and many birds. Those who are interested in the history and culture of the traditional Zulu region will find the many traces of the hero Shaka Zulu. Discover customs and rites in the authentic Zulu villages. After 1860, the British brought Indians to the country, and today they represent approx. 9% of the population, and they have sustainably characterized the province.
In Durban, the biggest city in KwaZulu-Natal, a visit to the Indian market is worth the time. The multi-cultural port town lies along the beaches of the Indian Ocean, and the promenade is called the „Golden Mile“. Here, you also find the new theme park uShaka Marine World with seawater aquarium.
