In the south, between West Cape and KwaZulu-Natal there is East Cape, the country’s biggest but one province. “Naturally – only the best of South Africa” is the promotion slogan of this province. The attractive, varied landscape is hardly touched by the great flows of tourists. Enjoy the endless coasts with wonderful sand beaches and rocky, wildly romantic lagoons. The sun coast between Port Elizabeth and East London and the Wild Coast east of East London are paradise for water sports lovers and fishermen. Jeffrey’s Bay is the Mecca for surfers. Wavy hills lead to the inner country. Close to the border to Lesotho the Drakensberge reach a height of 3,200 m. In the north-west, the Great Karoo reaches out in a fascinating width, the dry landscape is characterised by the many canyons. Hiking trails through the Valley of Desolation provide overwhelming views. The manifold ecological systems are home of uncounted plants, and the game reserves offer a giant animal kingdom, with the „Big Five“ among them. All game reserves in the East Cape are free of malaria!
One of the most picturesque routes through the province is the section of the world-famous garden route between Cape St. Francis and Plettenberg Bay. Along the rough coast of the Tsitsikamma National Park there are the country’s biggest local forests, and the legendary „Otter Trail“. Those who dare test the world’s highest bungee jump at the Bloukrans Bridge. Stormsriver offers the right adrenalin kick for all levels of outdoor athletes!
Besides the touristic highlights, there are also less popular destinations: wonderful natural reserves such as the Great Fish River Game Reserve or the woody Amatola Mountains with the thrilling hiking trails. East Cape is the home of the Xhosa, and Qunu is the hometown of Nelson Mandela. Some museums are dedicated to his work. Graaff-Reinet, the „pearl of the Karoo“ is one of the most beautiful cities. Grahamstown is known for its churches, schools and museums, and every year in June/July, it is also the host of Africa’s biggest cultural festival. Port Elizabeth (sea port) and East London (river port) are the two biggest cities and major industrial locations.
