Botswana

Botswana is surrounded by Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Only 1.6 million people live in this country bigger than France, most of them in the east of the country. They belong to the particularly peaceful and friendly Bantu tribe of Tswana. In 1967 the first diamonds were discovered in Botswana. Today the country is the world’s second biggest diamond producer. The desert-like dry savannah of the Kalahari covers wide areas. In the north-west, the Okavango River provides lush vegetation. Heavy rains in Angola between October and March lead great water volumes to the river. By mid April, the flood reaches delta in Botswana. The many channels then turn the inland delta into one of the world’s greatest sump lands. Therefore, May to August is the beast season to travel. With the many channels, island and ponds, wide papyrus growths, palm trees and other trees, the many animals and birds make it one of Africa’s last paradises. The Chobe National Park in the north-east of Botswana is also very rich in game. Here you can see big elephant herds.
